Chapter – 05

One Slap, Turned into Emergency Rescue

“Zhang Yang, let go of me.”

“I’m warning you, hitting people is against the law.”

Ye Zhiyang struggled with all his might, but Zhang Yang’s grip was like a vise—he simply couldn’t break free.

Zhang Yang shoved open the office door and threw Ye Zhiyang inside.

“Director Liu, Zhang Yang assaulted me! Call security!”

Ye Zhiyang scrambled to his feet and lodged his complaint in a fit of rage.

“What’s going on?”

Liu Piaoxu looked at Zhang Yang.

“I was packing my things when he walked over and, without a word, started calling me a waste.”

Zhang Yang spoke calmly, because he knew Liu Piaoxu would be even angrier than he was.

Sure enough, Liu Piaoxu’s expression darkened instantly. She stepped forward and slapped Ye Zhiyang hard across the face.

“Didn’t I tell you not to provoke Zhang Yang? You took my words as nothing but hot air?”

For Ye Zhiyang to call Zhang Yang a waste was equivalent to calling Liu Piaoxu’s judgment into question.

“He’s already resigned! Why are you still protecting him?”

Ye Zhiyang was both furious and resentful, a hint of hatred flashing in his eyes.

Zhang Yang happened to catch that venomous look. In one swift motion, he clamped his hand around Ye Zhiyang’s throat and hoisted him into the air, holding him level.

Oxygen-deprived, Ye Zhiyang’s eyes bulged and his tongue lolled out—he felt like his great-grandmother was waving at him from the great beyond.

“Zhang Yang, don’t be reckless!”

Fearing he might accidentally kill Ye Zhiyang, Liu Piaoxu rushed over and grabbed his arm.

“There was something malicious in the way he looked at you. I’m just teaching him a lesson.”

Zhang Yang delivered more than a dozen vicious slaps across Ye Zhiyang’s face, only stopping when the man’s head had swollen to the size of a pig’s. Then he dropped him to the floor.

Gasping for air, Ye Zhiyang stared at Zhang Yang as if he’d seen a ghost.

This guy wasn’t much bigger than him physically, yet he could lift him one-handed—terrifying.

“Cooperate with Sister Xu’s work from now on. If you ever stab her in the back, I’ll make sure you’re finished.”

Ye Zhiyang’s brain short-circuited.

Sister Xu?

Were they
 related?

No way!

Ye Zhiyang found it hard to believe, but the intimacy between the two left him no choice but to accept it.

“Zhang Yang resigned because he chose to leave the hospital, not because you’re more capable than him.”

“Not a single word about what’s between me and him—got it? Or you’re out.”

“Do you hear me?”

Liu Piaoxu rained down a torrent of reprimands.

Ye Zhiyang’s attitude immediately did a 180: “Director Liu, if Zhang Yang is your relative, why didn’t you say so earlier? Look at this awkward mess!”

“Who said we’re relatives?” Zhang Yang couldn’t help but laugh at the man’s cowardice.

“Aren’t you?”

Ye Zhiyang looked back and forth between them, confused.

Zhang Yang tilted Liu Piaoxu’s chin up, planted a kiss on her lips, and strode off.

Someone of Ye Zhiyang’s caliber wasn’t even worth his time to show off—he’d leave that to Liu Piaoxu.

Liu Piaoxu licked her lips and fixed Ye Zhiyang with an icy stare. “Now do you understand what we are?”

Heavens! Earth!

Ye Zhiyang nearly spat out a mouthful of blood in despair.

Liu Piaoxu was a medical doctor, the number one beauty at the Third Hospital, the youngest associate director—aloof, proud, and untouchable.

Zhang Yang was just an intern—no connections, average credentials. How on earth did the two of them end up together?

This was worse than death itself.

“If you want to stay, do your job well. Get out.”

With Zhang Yang gone, Liu Piaoxu had no interest in further conversation. And frankly, Ye Zhiyang wasn’t even in her league, let alone Zhang Yang’s.

“Yes, Director Liu.”

Ye Zhiyang felt like his world had collapsed. He trudged out of the office.

Zhang Yang was packing up at his workstation. Watching him, Ye Zhiyang’s emotions churned.

He’d thought they were both newbies starting from scratch—only to discover the other was a hidden boss.

What a bitter pill to swallow.

“Yang-ge, there’s something I should tell you.”

Bitter as it was, an apology was in order—he couldn’t afford to offend either Liu Piaoxu or Zhang Yang.

“Xia Wei’s been spreading word that you dated her for two years and never slept with her. I figured
”

“You figured someone like me, a waste, wouldn’t pass up the chance to kick a man when he’s down, right?”

“I’m sorry, Yang-ge. I was blind. I hope you won’t hold it against me.”

Ye Zhiyang groveled, apologizing profusely.

Just then, a petite nurse walked in from outside—it was Xia Wei.

Seeing Zhang Yang packing, Xia Wei immediately sneered: “Zhang Yang, now you see what happens when you cross me!”

She’d asked her friends to teach him a lesson, and apparently they’d come through—even getting him fired.

“What happens?”

“You got fired out of nowhere—doesn’t that strike you as odd?”

Zhang Yang stared at her, utterly baffled. Who got fired?

Beside him, Ye Zhiyang was equally dumbfounded. He hadn’t realized there was someone even dumber than himself.

“Pay me back that hundred thousand right now, or I’ll have your third leg broken,” Xia Wei threatened viciously.

“Looks like you haven’t gotten the call yet.”

No sooner had Zhang Yang spoken than Xia Wei’s phone rang.

“Know who this is? Brother Ji—he’s connected in the underworld. A piece of trash like you—he’s got a hundred ways to off you.” Xia Wei put the call on speaker and cooed into the phone, “Brother Ji, hello—”

“Hello my *ss!”

Brother Ji was livid, roaring through the phone, “You stupid b*tch! Didn’t you say that kid was just some ordinary doctor who couldn’t do a thing? Then how come he took out all five of my guys?”

“Brother Ji, that’s impossible.”

“Impossible my *ss! Five of my men—three with broken hands, two with broken legs. The medical bills won’t be less than a million. You’re paying for it.”

“Brother Ji, I don’t have that kind of money!”

“Your sugar daddy’s loaded, isn’t he? Make him pay. If he won’t, I’ll sell you to Africa as a prostitute, dammit!”

Brother Ji hung up with a curse.

Xia Wei staggered, nearly collapsing.

“Zhang Yang’s so scrawny—no way he could take on five guys at once. Brother Ji must have gotten it wrong.”

Just as she was about to call back, a lighthearted voice came from beside her: “Five? Yang-ge could take ten, easy.”

It was Ye Zhiyang, who’d been watching the whole show.

To lift a 130-pound man overhead with one hand—even a world champion boxer couldn’t match that arm strength.

“I was going to beat you up, but then I figured if I hurt you, you wouldn’t sell for a good price. So never mind.”

Zhang Yang finished packing and turned to leave.

“Don’t go! Give me my money back!”

Xia Wei lunged forward and grabbed Zhang Yang’s arm, refusing to let him leave.

Zhang Yang spun around and delivered a slap.

Xia Wei flew clear off the ground, sailing five or six meters through the air before slamming hard into the wall.

“I didn’t want to hit you, but you made me. You really are something else.”

Zhang Yang glanced at the stunned Ye Zhiyang and pointed at Xia Wei, who was barely clinging to life. “What are you standing there for? Get her to the ER!”

“Yes, Yang-ge!”

Full of admiration, Ye Zhiyang hurried over and hoisted Xia Wei onto a wheelchair.

Then Zhang Yang called Liu Piaoxu, grinning, and asked, “Sister Xu, same thing tonight?”

As a man who’d been single for over twenty years, this sort of thing was way too addictive.

“You bad boy.”

Liu Piaoxu scolded him playfully, her voice coy.
