Chapter 09
The White Snake 2
Bright red berries were scattered all over the ground
A fair skinned beautiful girl sat on the forest floor in shock beside a Snake Tribe beastman in his original form whose white tail was hooked around her
That was the scene Claire saw when he arrived
The moment he heard Su Yuzhi’s cry for help he immediately threw down the animal hide he had been working on and rushed toward her
Even while tanning the hide he had been secretly keeping an eye on her making sure he could reach her side within seconds
“Claire save me Waaaah”
The instant she turned around and saw such an enormous white snake Su Yuzhi nearly lost her soul from fright
Before she could even think she had instinctively shouted Claire’s name
Even though she knew the white snake was probably a beastman and meant her no harm she still couldn’t suppress her natural fear
She had been terrified of snakes ever since childhood
One summer vacation Ms Su had taken her back to their hometown for a while
Their old home was a simple two story concrete house in the countryside where snakes insects and rats were common
One night while she was half asleep she reached out and grabbed something cold smooth and soft
When she turned on the light she discovered a snake inside her blanket
The experience had frightened her so badly that she never stayed at her hometown again and Ms Su had teased her about it for years afterward
Now faced with this enormous white snake her legs gave out beneath her and she collapsed to the ground dropping all of the berries she had gathered
She wanted to get up and hide behind Claire but her arms and legs had gone completely weak
All she could do was look at him pitifully
Claire bent down and lifted Su Yuzhi into his arms
The white snake immediately loosened its tail from around her ankle
“Why are you afraid of me”
The white snake spoke
His voice was clear gentle and pleasant like the sound of flowing spring water
Su Yuzhi’s inner thoughts
Isn’t it perfectly normal to be afraid of snakes
Especially one this huge
Outwardly however she simply shrank into Claire’s embrace
His broad shoulders and well developed chest gave her an overwhelming sense of safety
“Yesterday I saved you Why did you run”
The white snake transformed before them into a white haired man wearing a long white robe
Whenever male beastmen transformed their fur became clothing
Claire’s tiger fur became a set of yellow black and white fur garments
The white snake’s scales became a flowing white robe
Females had no beast form and therefore could not create clothing through transformation
The fur garments they wore were made from the hides of ordinary beasts
Meanwhile Su Yuzhi was trying to remember
Yesterday
After reading Basic Knowledge of the Beast World she had learned that the forest was extremely dangerous at night
Many wild beasts came out to hunt after dark
She had assumed she had slept peacefully until morning simply because she had been lucky
Now she realized it had actually been this white snake protecting her
She suddenly remembered the white snake she had seen when she first woke up yesterday
So it had been him all along
“Thank you for yesterday”
After thinking for a moment Su Yuzhi poked her head out from Claire’s arms and sincerely thanked him
No matter what he had helped her
Without him she might have become food for wild beasts the night before last
So had he come looking for her to ask for repayment
Unfortunately she didn’t seem to have anything valuable to offer
“No need to thank me I saved you so you are my female There is no need for mates to thank each other It’s only natural”
The white snake slowly spoke words that completely stunned Su Yuzhi
In the white snake’s eyes Su Yuzhi had appeared alone in the forest in the middle of the night
That meant her tribe had abandoned her
He didn’t know why such a beautiful female had been cast out
But since she had already been abandoned she probably had nowhere else to go
If he took her home then she naturally became his female
Besides she smelled wonderful and he liked her very much
Originally he had planned to wait until she woke up before taking her home
Carrying her away while she was asleep didn’t seem appropriate
So he had stayed beside her protecting her throughout the entire night
To his surprise after she woke up she wriggled around on the ground picked up her belongings carefully moved away a short distance and suddenly ran off
Completely confused he followed after her
He discovered that she was simply wandering slowly through the forest
So while quietly approaching her he also dealt with any wild beasts that might have threatened her
Then he watched as she fainted and was carried away by a tiger
The tiger took her to the nearest Leopard Tribe settlement
Most beastmen disliked male Snake Tribe members
Snake Tribe males possessed extremely strong possessiveness
There had been many incidents where they attacked their female’s other mates
If a female failed to notice the warning signs early enough a possessive Snake Tribe male would often target her other mates
They would eliminate the weaker ones first then wait until the stronger rivals were injured before finishing them off as well
If this had been Earth the Snake Tribe males’ belief in lifelong monogamy would not have been considered wrong
But this was the Beast World
If females accepted only a single mate as Snake Tribe males wished most tribes would probably have gone extinct long ago
Because of their excessive possessiveness Snake Tribe males were extremely unwelcome in the territories of other tribes
Weaker tribes might tolerate a Snake Tribe male entering their settlement
The Leopard Tribe however was one of the strongest tribes
They would simply beat intruders up
As a result the white snake could only wait near the Leopard Tribe for Su Yuzhi to come out on her own
After all getting beaten up really hurt
His older brother had once come to the Leopard Tribe to court a female and had been beaten countless times
Thinking this he simply hung himself from a tree and waited
The sun set
The moon rose
The moon set
Then the sun rose once again
