Chapter 05
Having fed stray cats for so long, Shen Yunmiao had become experienced enough to notice something was wrong immediately. She reached over and touched the black cat’s abdomen. It was sticky, covered in blood.
She frowned. “Xiao Hei, what happened to you? Did you get into a fight?”
In Shen Yunmiao’s impression, this little black cat was quite good at fighting and was rarely injured. It seemed to be the leader of the cats around here.
However, Shen Yunmiao wasn’t particularly close to it because she had once seen it bullying her little white cat. The poor little white cat had hidden away crying pitifully while being beaten.
Although she had stopped it and scolded it at the time, there was no guarantee the black cat wouldn’t fight again. Shen Yunmiao glanced around at the surrounding cats.
Sure enough, every cat was there except Guai Guai.
If the fight had just happened, and Xiao Heiâwho was such a capable fighterâhad been injured this badly, then the cat it had fought must have suffered even worse. It probably couldn’t even come over to eat.
Shen Yunmiao narrowed her eyes, a trace of scrutiny flashing through them.
The black cat sensed that the usually gentle person had suddenly become very different today, and it instinctively shrank back a little.
In the dim alley, dogs barked one after another without stopping. Several battered wooden crates were kicked around, sending clouds of dust into the air.
A little white cat looked especially pitiful amidst the bleak surroundings. Several stray dogs surrounded her, drool dripping from their mouths.
As Cheng Jianian watched the dogs, she calculated how she could break through them while secretly hoping that foolish Xiaobai wouldn’t show up at a time like this.
Otherwise, she’d have another burden to worry about, making escape even harder.
There was no point hoping that the kind heroine would come save her now. Besides, President Xiao Cheng had never been someone who indulged in unrealistic fantasies.
Seeing the two leading dogs draw closer and closer, Cheng Jianian quietly unsheathed her claws. Taking down one dog wouldn’t be a problem, but if several attacked together, her best chance would be finding the right moment to dash through.
She silently worked out her plan.
The light was too dim, and the night too dark. Only a few pairs of eyes glowed faintly in the darkness.
Her body was stretched taut to its limit, her heartbeat racing with terrifying speed.
Just as the tension reached its peak, a beam of light suddenly shone into the alley, illuminating the place that had been swallowed by darkness. In an instant, the entire alley blazed with light.
The stray dogs turned their heads warily, but none of them backed away.
The beam shone directly into their eyes. It hurt, but they could endure it. Normally, no one ever came here. People instinctively avoided places where packs of dogs gathered.
But today’s visitor was different.
She seemed determined to enter.
Step by steady step, she walked forward without paying any attention to the dogs.
The light originated from her, yet it enveloped the little white cat in the center.
After enduring the darkness for so long, the cat could no longer hold back and let out two soft whimpers.
The stray dogs still didn’t dare make the first move. They bared their teeth and growled, trying to scare away this person who clearly had never been bitten by a dog and didn’t understand the pain.
They failed.
She continued walking deeper into the pitch-black alley.
The wind fluttered the hem of her thin clothing, outlining her slender yet resilient figure.
Moonlight rested within her almond-shaped eyes, making them as clear and luminous as early autumn dew.
Never before had Cheng Jianian thought Shen Yunmiao looked so pleasing to the eye.
The sight brought an overwhelming sense of security to her little cat heart.
When the young woman picked her up again, she didn’t resist.
Instead, she allowed herself to be wrapped in that crisp, snow-like scent.
Shen Yunmiao’s voice remained as gentle and reassuring as ever.
“Don’t be afraid, Guai Guai. I’m here.”
President Xiao Cheng, in kitten form, suddenly felt her nose sting.
Her eyes nearly turned red.
Without thinking, she rubbed herself against the person who was supposed to be her destined enemy.
So soft.
So fragrant.
Kitty liked it very much.
Only after they left the alley did Cheng Jianian suddenly realize what she had just done.
It was all those stray dogs’ fault.
If they hadn’t frightened her so badly, she never would have done something so embarrassing.
Feeling indignant, President Xiao Cheng the kitten stomped on Shen Yunmiao’s arm.
And it was this person’s fault too.
Why had she come looking for her?
She didn’t need anyone’s help.
How annoying.
Feeling the little cat’s movement, Shen Yunmiao couldn’t help laughing softly. She reached up and rubbed the kitten’s head.
“Why are you kneading today?”
K… kneading?
The composed President Xiao Cheng instantly blushed.
Who was kneading?
She was obviously kicking her!
What nonsense!
Was this woman so desperate for a cat that she’d lost her mind?
President Xiao Cheng stomped several more times, determined to prove she wasn’t playing around.
Unexpectedly, instead of petting her this time…
She was kissed.
The warm, soft sensation landed gently on top of her head.
The young woman’s full lips pressed against her like a seal, leaving the little cat completely powerless to resist.
President Xiao Cheng thought that if Shen Yunmiao hadn’t performed so well today, she definitely would have taught her a lesson.
Shen Yunmiao had no idea what the little cat was thinking.
Holding Guai Guai in her arms, she returned to the same veterinary clinic as yesterday.
After another brief examination, the veterinarian told her that the kitten was perfectly fine, though she could receive a vaccination.
Shen Yunmiao readily agreed.
Now that she had money, of course she wanted to spend it on her little cat.
Otherwise, what was the point of earning so much?
Unfortunately, it still wasn’t enough.
If she were truly wealthy, she’d simply install medical equipment at home so she could check on her kitten’s health anytime.
Meanwhile, Cheng Jianian had already recovered her energy.
She was plotting how to viciously scratch that black cat the next time they met.
She also intended to teach those stray dogs a lesson whenever they were alone.
But when they left the clinic, she froze.
Shen Yunmiao hadn’t taken her back to the alley where all the cats usually gathered.
Instead, she headed straight to an unfamiliar apartment.
It was a small one-bedroom apartment.
Though compact, it had everything necessary.
The appliances and furnishings were decent enoughânot luxurious, but not too shabby either.
Cheng Jianian remembered what Shen Yunmiao had said that morning.
Her fluffy tail, dangling in the air, unconsciously swayed.
Hmph.
At least she remembered what she’d promised.
After switching on the lights, Shen Yunmiao finally set the kitten down.
Gently rubbing Guai Guai’s head, she smiled.
“From now on, this is our home, Guai Guai. Your big sister will film lots and lots of dramas, earn lots and lots of money, and someday we’ll move into an even bigger and prettier house.”
Big… sister?
President Xiao Cheng immediately blushed.
Who was this woman’s little sister?
“Big sister” this, “big sister” that.
How embarrassing.
Her thoughts began to wander.
President Xiao Cheng wasn’t just gifted at actingâshe was also a business genius.
Acting had always been only a hobby.
Businesspeople tended to have excellent memories.
She vaguely remembered a scene in the original story where she had ruined Shen Yunmiao’s birthday.
When had that been?
April twenty-first.
President Xiao Cheng’s birthday was in the summerâJune fifteenth.
By that calculation, calling Shen Yunmiao “big sister” wasn’t entirely unreasonable.
What was Ji Hanfeng’s birthday again?
Forget it.
Not important.
Just thinking about his name annoyed President Xiao Cheng.
She couldn’t be bothered recalling anything related to him.
In any case, even if Ji Hanfeng were younger than Shen Yunmiao, there was no way he’d shamelessly call her “big sister.”
That would be far too embarrassing.
As a cat, however, calling her that was barely acceptable.
While Cheng Jianian was still comparing birthdays, Shen Yunmiao had already busied herself cleaning the apartment and arranging the cat supplies she had bought from the veterinary clinic.
The autumn-blue cat bed was trimmed with a circle of soft white fur.
It looked incredibly cozy.
The food bowl had two tiny cat ears decorating its rim.
Even a cat tree had been set up.
The picky President Xiao Cheng circled everything once before finally nodding in reluctant approval.
“Meow.”
Not bad.
Shen Yunmiao was assembling the cat tree.
Seeing the kitten acting as though she already owned the place, she couldn’t help laughing.
“Are you satisfied, Guai Guai?”
“Meow meow!”
It’s acceptable.
President Xiao Cheng lifted her chin proudly, looking every bit like an elegant, noble little white cat.
The sight made Shen Yunmiao’s heart itch.
She wanted nothing more than to pull the kitten into her arms and cuddle her to her heart’s content.
But assembling Guai Guai’s cat tree came first.
She quickened her pace.
Cheng Jianian stopped meowing and obediently lay down beside her, looking unusually well-behaved.
One person.
One cat.
Sharing the same warm light beneath the night sky.
President Xiao Cheng felt a sense of warmth that had long been absent from her life.
Suddenly, the phone rang.
The unfamiliar ringtone shattered the peaceful atmosphere.
Shen Yunmiao had left her phone on the floor while watching an assembly tutorial.
As a result, Cheng Jianian immediately saw the caller ID.
It was a name she knew all too well.
Ji Hanfeng.
Chapter 5
My Wife’s Water Has Electricity, Meow!
Being a cat did have its advantages.
Shen Yunmiao answered the call right in front of Cheng Jianian without the slightest guard, completely unaware that her beloved kitten was originally destined to bring endless suffering into her life.
Busy assembling the cat tree, Shen Yunmiao simply turned on speakerphone and left the phone on the floor.
Ji Hanfeng’s low, husky voice came through.
“Yunmiao, how have you been lately?”
“Pretty well. I rented an apartment today and brought my little cat home,” Shen Yunmiao replied without pausing her work.
Ji Hanfeng hesitated before speaking.
“Yunmiao, you can barely afford to support yourself. Why are you raising a cat?”
His words were rather harsh.
Cheng Jianian shot the phone an annoyed glare.
Shen Yunmiao quickly reached over and gently stroked the kitten’s soft back twice.
Her voice remained gentle, but the hint of disapproval was unmistakable.
“Hanfeng, you’re on speaker. Please don’t say things like that anymore. The little cat will be unhappy if she hears it. I know you’re worried about me, but you don’t have to be. I found a part-time job that pays very well. I can support both my little cat and myself now.”
Ji Hanfeng sighed helplessly.
“Do whatever you want. Just make sure you check out the company first. Don’t get scammed.”
“I won’t. A very famous director invited me to act,” Shen Yunmiao said as she hugged Cheng Jianian into her arms and soothingly rubbed her fur. “I looked everything up online. It’s legitimate. She’s an incredible director. She wouldn’t deceive me.”
“Even so, stay alert. What if someone wants to exploit you?”
Shen Yunmiao sighed before answering seriously.
“Hanfeng, please don’t say things like that. The director who found me is Director Jian Shen. She’s a wonderful person. She even advanced part of my salary today. Besides, Director Jian Shen herself is so beautiful. Why would she ever be interested in someone like me?”
Ji Hanfeng had nothing left to argue.
“Fine. You always have an answer for everything. Just remember to call me if anything feels wrong.”
