Chapter – 03

“If I Can Be With You”

“…Aira.”

“What?”

“…Could you leave the room?”

I went back to my room to change into my uniform.

That part was fine, but the problem was that for some reason, Aira had followed me in.

“Why?”

“‘Why’—”

That’s as far as I got before I realized.

Come to think of it, back in the other world, Aira never seemed to mind, so I used to change clothes in front of her too.

…Maybe it’s the effect of being younger, but am I starting to see Aira not as a daughter, but as a member of the opposite sex…? No, that’s not it. That can’t be it. Aira is my daughter, nothing more and nothing less.

I raised her from the time she was eight years old, didn’t I? There’s no way I could see her that way.

“Never mind. Do whatever you want.”

“Okay. I’ll do whatever I want.”

And so, trying not to be conscious of Aira, I changed my clothes.

“…I’m going to school now, but what are you going to do?”

I kind of already knew the answer, but I asked anyway, partly to hide my embarrassment.

“I’ll go with Hiroto.”

“…I see. That itself is fine, but sorry, just make sure no one sees you.”

Aira is from another world, so of course she has no family registry. And she doesn’t have any relatives either. …Well, I’m her parent, but we’re not related by blood, and I’m still a high schooler, so nobody would believe me even if I told them.

Anyway, since she has no registry and no relatives, it’s impossible for her to attend the same school. Sorry to Aira, but she can’t be seen.

If she were spotted on school grounds, she’d just be a suspicious person.

…I suppose I could tell my sister the situation and ask her to arrange for Aira to attend the same school, but… how would I even explain it?

There’s no way she’d believe me if I started talking about another world, and there’s no guarantee she’d accept Aira.

Of course, my sister is a kind person, but she’s properly cautious around anyone who isn’t family. Even if that someone is a sixteen-year-old girl.

“Same as always, so it’s fine.”

…Yeah, I guess so.

Back in the other world too, she’d always disappear from sight and stay close by, except when we were alone together. …Well, I couldn’t see her, so I don’t know if she was really always there, but she probably was.

“I see. …Alright, let’s go. To school.”

For me, it’s my first time going to school in eight years.

…Honestly, I don’t feel like I can keep up with the lessons at all.

I have that anxiety, but more than that, I’m happy to see my friends again.

I grabbed the lunchbox my sister made for me, made sure to lock the front door properly, and left the house.

I can’t even sense her presence anymore, but Aira is probably with me too.

“Aira, I want you to answer without showing yourself, but… aren’t you hungry?”

If she came back to this world at the same time as me, it should be about time for her to get hungry, so I asked, a bit late.

“…I’m hungry.”

“…Let’s stop by a convenience store.”

For lunch… I guess we can share my lunchbox.

If I weren’t a male high school student, I’d just buy a bento for Aira at the convenience store too, but unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of money since I haven’t gotten a part-time job here yet.

“I guess… thank you.”

She probably said that because she doesn’t know what a convenience store is. I did teach her a bit about this world, but I never told her about convenience stores.

“Don’t worry about it.”

Honestly, just buying Aira’s breakfast is already putting a decent dent in my wallet, but oh well. It’s for my daughter.

At just sixteen, Hiroto was suddenly summoned to another world. He spent eight long years fighting, struggling, and surviving—until he finally made it back home. Naturally, he was anxious about how people would treat him after so long. But to his relief, his body had returned to the same sixteen-year-old state it was in when he’d first disappeared. His parents were gone. The only family he had left was his older sister—and it was for her sake that he made returning home his one and only goal. That determination fueled his journey through the other world, and finally setting foot back in his own world filled him with a wave of relief.
But along with that relief came a heavy, lingering emptiness. Little did Hiroto know, that emptiness wouldn’t last long. Just minutes after his return, the girl he’d practically raised like a daughter suddenly showed up in his world, too. And she had no intention of leaving him behind.
