He stared at the chair for a moment, remaining silent.
Su Wanqing stood up and patted her pants. “Alright, work is done. Did you do what I asked you to do?”
“How would I dare disobey your orders, little lady?”
As he spoke, Lu Shiyan pulled two pencils and an eraser from his pocket and handed them to her.
Su Wanqing took them, looked them over, and asked, “What else? Where is the food?”
“I’ll bring it to you tonight.” Lu Shiyan looked at her. “The usual place, come and get it yourself.”
Su Wanqing glared at him. “You want me to go to the cowshed?”
“Not the cowshed,” Lu Shiyan said. “The same haystack as yesterday.”
Remembering what happened yesterday, Su Wanqing’s legs squeezed together unnaturally, and her face grew warm. “I’m not going!”
Lu Shiyan looked at her, his lips curving slightly. “If you don’t come, then forget it. I’ll eat the food myself.”
Su Wanqing bit her lip and cursed softly, “Rogue!”
She had food in her space, but it was all basic supplies. Eating too many biscuits and canned goods got tiresome. Lu Shiyan operated in the black market, so whatever he managed to get was bound to be good stuff.
She thought about it and asked, “What time?”
A flicker of a smile appeared in Lu Shiyan’s eyes. “After dark.”
Su Wanqing glared at him. “Got it.”
Captivated by her glare, Lu Shiyan suddenly took a step forward and leaned close to her ear again.
Su Wanqing panicked and retreated a few steps, looking left and right. Fortunately, everyone had gone home to eat lunch, so there was barely anyone around. “Oh, what are you doing?”
Lu Shiyan lowered his voice. “If you need anything done in the future, just order me around. Don’t call Erhu anymore, it’s annoying to hear.”
Su Wanqing froze, and before she could react, Lu Shiyan had already straightened up, turned around, and walked away.
She stood in place, watching his retreating figure disappear into the distance. It took her quite a while to snap out of it.
“What is wrong with him?” she muttered. “What did Erhu ever do to provoke you?”
After gathering her things, she started walking back.
Halfway there, she ran into the same girls from the afternoon. This time, they had learned their lesson. Knowing they were no match for Su Wanqing, they bypassed her as soon as they saw her, keeping a wide distance.
Seeing their behavior, Su Wanqing couldn’t help but cover her mouth and giggle.
Once night fell, Su Wanqing used the excuse of using the restroom to quietly slip out of the youth educated center.
The moon hadn’t risen yet, and it was pitch black all around, with the endless chirping of cicadas.
Familiar with the route, she made her way to the haystacks at the edge of the village, heading to the innermost oneāthe same one they had been in yesterday.
Lu Shiyan had already arrived, leaning against the haystack, lost in thought. Hearing footsteps, he turned his head.
Su Wanqing walked over. “Where’s the food?”
Lu Shiyan picked up a cloth bundle from beside him and handed it to her.
Su Wanqing took it and opened it, and a fragrant aroma instantly rushed into her nose. Her eyes lit up immediately.
Inside, besides two large white flour buns, there was half a glistening, savory braised chicken, and a pack of imported candies.
“So much?” she asked in pleasant surprise.
Lu Shiyan didn’t answer, he just stared at her. Under the moonlight, her face seemed to glow white, her eyes were bright, and the corners of her mouth were turned up, making her look so beautiful that one couldn’t look away.
“What are you looking at?” Su Wanqing packed up the cloth bundle, looked up, and glared at him.
Lu Shiyan suddenly reached out and pulled her into his arms.
Su Wanqing was startled. “What are you doing?”
Lu Shiyan lowered his head, burying his face in the crook of her neck, and said in a muffled voice, “Don’t move, let me hold you for a while.”
Su Wanqing struggled a bit, but couldn’t break free. There was a scent of sweat on him mixed with the smell of soap pod. Blended together, it wasn’t unpleasant.
“It’s boiling hot,” she grumbled.
Lu Shiyan didn’t speak, he just held her tighter.
After a long while, he finally spoke, his voice low and muffled, “Don’t pay attention to Erhu in the future.”
Su Wanqing froze for a second, then couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “Are you jealous?”
Lu Shiyan remained silent.
Su Wanqing laughed so hard her body trembled. “Lu Shiyan, how old are you, and you’re still getting jealous over this?”
Lu Shiyan raised his head, looking at her laughing face. He suddenly lowered his head and kissed her on the mouth.
Su Wanqing’s laughter came to an abrupt halt.
The cloth bundle rolled to the side, and the braised chicken inside almost tumbled out.
The haystack shook for an unknown amount of time.
After quite a while, Lu Shiyan finally let her go.
Su Wanqing lay slumped on the pile of hay. The buttons of her floral cotton shirt were completely undone, her braids were half unraveled, and her messy hair was spread across the grass. Her face was burning intensely, her chest heaving up and down, as she failed to catch her breath for a long time.
Lu Shiyan propped himself up over her, looking down at her. He couldn’t understand how a person could grow up to look this beautiful. Under the moonlight, her face was as flushed as if it had been painted with rouge, her eyes were watery, and her lips were slightly swollen and glistening.
He could never look at her enough, wishing he could take a bite out of her.
He sighed. Su Wanqing was incredibly delicate, and he couldn’t bring himself to actually bite her. Sighing again, he lowered his head and kissed her on the forehead.
Only then did Su Wanqing snap out of it. She raised her hands to push him. “Get off me, you’re so heavy.”
Lu Shiyan didn’t move; instead, he kissed the tip of her nose.
Su Wanqing turned her face away. “Did you hear me? Get off.”
Only then did Lu Shiyan prop himself up, sitting down to the side and leaning against the haystack. He pulled a cigarette from his pants pocket, placed it between his lips, took out a matchbook, struck a match, and lit it.
The moment the flame flared up, it illuminated his face. Sweat poured down his temples and along his cheeks, but his eyes were incredibly bright, like a hungry wolf in the night. He took a drag of the cigarette, and the smoke drifted away.
Su Wanqing sat up and looked down at herself. Her buttons were all undone, revealing her fair skin inside. Her face grew hot, and she hastily fastened the buttons one by one.
Then she gathered her hair. Her braids were a complete mess, so she simply pulled them all apart, combed through them with her fingers, and braided them anew.
Halfway through braiding, she looked up and glared at him. “Are you using too much strength? You hurt me. There are definitely bruised spots in a few places.”
Lu Shiyan exhaled a puff of smoke and looked down at her.
Seeing that he didn’t believe her, Su Wanqing crossly lifted her arm to show him. Under the moonlight, on that fair, slender wrist, there were indeed several red marks.
“And my waist too,” Su Wanqing said, lifting a corner of her shirt to glance down. “It’s definitely bruised as well.”
Lu Shiyan took a look, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He took another drag of his cigarette, his voice sounding a bit hoarse. “Mm.”
“What do you mean ‘mm’?” Su Wanqing glared at him. “I’m talking to you. You used too much force and hurt me.”
Lu Shiyan looked at her, the corner of his mouth twitching slightly. “Delicate.”
“Who’s delicate?” Su Wanqing refused to accept it. “Lu Shiyan, it’s clearly you who has too much strength.”
Lu Shiyan didn’t argue, a trace of amusement in his eyes. “Alright, alright, I’ll go easier next time.”
Being looked at by him like this made Su Wanqing’s face heat up again. She averted her eyes and continued braiding her hair.
Once it was done, she patted the stray bits of hay off her body and reached out to pick up the cloth bundle. Fortunately, the braised chicken was perfectly fine, and the buns hadn’t gotten dirty.
She breathed a sigh of relief, holding the bundle in her arms. “Alright, I’m going back.”
Just as she tried to stand up, her legs went soft, and she nearly took a nasty spill. Lu Shiyan, quick with his eyes and hands, reached out to support her and pulled her back into his embrace.
Falling into his lap, Su Wanqing grew angrier the more she thought about it. She reached out and gave his waist a hard pinch. “It’s all your fault.”
“Yes, yes, it’s my fault,” Lu Shiyan coaxed her half-heartedly. Keeping the cigarette between his lips, he freed up his hands to pat the grass off her back.
Su Wanqing froze for a moment and didn’t move.
