He patted her very gently, stroke by stroke, brushing away all the stray pieces of straw from her clothes.
Even after cleaning her off, he didn’t let go, keeping her locked in his embrace.
Leaning against his chest and smelling the mixture of cigarette smoke and sweat on him, Su Wanqing suddenly felt a bit self-conscious.
“Alright, that’s enough,” she said, reaching out to push him away. “I need to get back. It won’t look good if someone sees us.”
Only then did Lu Shiyan release his grip.
Su Wanqing stood up, cradling the cloth bundle, and looked down at him.
He was leaning against the haystack with a cigarette clamped between his teeth. The moonlight fell across his face, highlighting his sharp contours and distinct bone structure. As Su Wanqing watched him, she actually found herself dazed by his looks.
Right at that moment, a sudden chorus of dog barks erupted in the distance.
Woof woof woof! Woof woof woof!
The barking was fierce and frantic, showing no signs of stopping.
Su Wanqing froze in her tracks, her heart skipping a beat as a chill ran down her spine.
Immediately after, human voices carried over.
“Hurry, hurry! Right up ahead!”
“Hold the flashlights steady, don’t trip!”
“I saw it with my own two eyesāa man and a woman came this way!”
Su Wanqing’s entire body turned rigid, leaving her unable to move a muscle.
She knew that voice all too well. It was Zhang Hongying.
Living in the same room every day, the thing that arrived earlier than breakfast was always Zhang Hongying’s sarcastic remarks. No matter what Su Wanqing did, Zhang Hongying always had to throw a few passive-aggressive jabs her way.
Sensing that her body had stiffened, Lu Shiyan looked down at her.
Su Wanqing’s face was terrifyingly pale, her lips were pressed into a tight line, and her fingernails turned white from gripping the cloth bundle so hard.
“You know them?” he asked in a low voice.
Su Wanqing nodded. Her throat felt tight, and it took her quite an effort just to squeeze out three words: “It’s Zhang Hongying.”
The voices in the distance drew closer and closer. The beams of the flashlights flickered back and forth on the other side of the haystacks, and the dogs barked louder and more fiercely with each passing second.
“Hurry up! It’s right in that patch of haystacks! I saw it with my own eyesāa man and a woman snuck over here!”
Zhang Hongying’s voice was sharp and shrill, laced with an excitement she couldn’t hide.
“Are you sure you saw clearly?” This was the production team leader’s voice.
“Positive! Leader, I’ve been keeping an eye on her all night!” Zhang Hongying was eager to take credit. “That shameless tramp Su Wanqing snuck out the moment it got dark. I felt something was off, so I secretly followed her. I watched her come to this very patch of haystacks, and she was with a man!”
“A man? Which man?”
“It was too dark to see his face clearly, but it’s definitely a man! With that build, there’s no way it could be a woman!”
Listening to these words, Su Wanqing’s heart pounded like a frantic drum, thumping wildly against her chest.
She recalled that when she left the room earlier, Zhang Hongying had indeed been inside. She had been lying on the bed facing the wall at the time, so Su Wanqing thought she was asleep.
As it turned out, she had been faking it.
Thinking about what the two of them had just done in the haystack…
Su Wanqing’s face instantly burned with heat. A mixture of anger and resentment washed over her, and she couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch Lu Shiyan tightly to vent her frustration.
Lu Shiyan quickly caught her hand, squeezing it firmly to signal her not to panic.
Su Wanqing looked up at him. Under the moonlight, that face of his was truly handsomeādangerously so.
“Don’t be afraid,” he said simply, his voice perfectly steady.
Su Wanqing’s heart suddenly settled down.
That’s right, what was there to fear? Both of them were unmarried, so they were just legitimately seeing each other as a couple. It wasn’t against the law.
“Search them one by one! They must be in this area!”
“Shine the lights behind the haystacks, don’t miss a spot!”
“You guys go over there, the rest of you follow me!”
The flashlight beams swept back and forth between the haystacks. A few stray beams even brushed right past the gap where they were hiding, making Su Wanqing hold her breath in terror.
Lu Shiyan suddenly let go of her hand. Bending down, he swept the scattered straw on the ground into a pile and stuffed the cloth bundle from her arms underneath it.
Then he straightened up, pulling her further back into the depths of the gap.
The gap was very narrow, flanked on both sides by tall stacks of hay, and the innermost part was a dead end with nowhere left to run.
Lu Shiyan pushed her to the very back, using his own body to shield her entirely, preventing her from being exposed to the outside.
Shrinking behind him, Su Wanqing could only see his back.
His undershirt was thoroughly soaked with sweat, clinging tightly to his skin and clearly outlining the contours of his shoulder blades.
Hiding behind him and watching his heavily guarded posture as if facing a formidable enemy, Su Wanqing suddenly felt a bit amused.
With a mischievous streak, she reached out and poked his waist.
Lu Shiyan’s body stiffened. He turned his head to look at her, his eyes filled with silent questioning, as if asking what she was doing.
Su Wanqing stood on her tiptoes, leaned into his ear, and whispered, “What are you hiding for?”
Lu Shiyan blanked out. This little enchantressādid she really have the heart to fool around at a time like this?
Amusement danced in Su Wanqing’s eyes as she poked him again. “It’s not like we’re doing something shameful. What are you hiding from?”
Lu Shiyan stared at her, his brows furrowed, completely failing to understand what she was trying to pull.
The footsteps outside drew closer and closer. The flashlight beams flickered violently at the entrance of the gap, looking as though they were about to shine straight inside any second.
Yet, Su Wanqing stepped out from behind him, patted the straw debris off her clothes, and smoothed down her unraveled hair.
“Let’s go,” she said decisively.
Lu Shiyan grabbed her arm, asking anxiously, “What are you doing?”
Su Wanqing looked back at him, a radiant, bold smile spreading across her face under the moonlight. “Going out, of course. We’re both unmarried and legitimately dating. What’s there to be afraid of?”
Dating? He had brought it up so many times before, yet this little enchantress had never agreed. Had the sun risen from the west today?
Lu Shiyan stared at her, the expression in his eyes shifting rapidly as a wave of shock and joy washed over his heart.
Before he could react, Su Wanqing reached back to grab his wrist and pulled him straight outside.
“Su Wanqing!” Lu Shiyan called out to her in a low voice.
Su Wanqing didn’t look back, nor did she stop her pace, dragging him firmly forward.
The moment the two of them emerged from the gap, they walked right into the flashlight beams.
Several beams of light snapped over simultaneously, so bright that it was impossible to keep one’s eyes open.
“There’s someone here!”
“They’re out, they’re out!”
“Catch them! Don’t let them run away!”
The crowd swarmed forward instantly, the dancing flashlight beams making everyone’s eyes ache with dizziness.
Zhang Hongying squeezed her way to the very front, aiming her flashlight directly at Su Wanqing’s face. When she saw Su Wanqing’s messy hair, her flushed face, and her slightly swollen lips, anyone with eyes could tell exactly what kind of shameful act had just taken place.
“It’s her! It’s her!” Zhang Hongying began to shriek, her voice sharp and piercing, wishing the entire village could hear her. “Su Wanqing is having an illicit affair! I caught her red-handed! Everyone, come look!”
As she spoke, she lunged forward, reaching out to grab Su Wanqing by the collar.
Su Wanqing dodged to the side. She didn’t clear it completely, and Zhang Hongying managed to snag her sleeve.
Tugging at her, Zhang Hongying dragged her toward the crowd. “Come on! Let’s go see the production leader! Let everyone witness what a shameless tramp you are! Dressing up all glamorous every day just to seduce men! I finally caught you this time!”
Pulled forcefully by the tug, Su Wanqing stumbled and nearly fell over.
Lu Shiyan’s face darkened instantly. Taking a step forward, he prepared to step in and forcefully tear Zhang Hongying away.
Su Wanqing quickly gave his arm a reassuring pat, signaling that she could handle this herself.
