Chapter 07
“Who are you? Why are you in President Mu’s office?”
A woman walking in high heels stepped inside. She sized Yun Chu up with deep suspicion, holding a stack of documents which she then placed on the office desk.
Yun Chu’s sixth sense told her that this person harbored a strong animosity toward her.
Yun Chu stood up. “I’m Yun Chu, effectively President Mu’s assistant.”
The woman clearly didn’t believe her, her expression full of wariness and aloofness. “I am the project manager, Anna. These documents need to be given to President Mu by Gao Sheng for his signature. Do not mess with them. Also, have you reported to the Human Resources department yet?”
She deliberately mentioned Gao Sheng while disregarding her; it was a blatant display of hostility.
Reporting to HR? Yun Chu had never worked before, so she wasn’t entirely familiar with corporate procedures. “Not yet,” Yun Chu replied.
Anna crossed her arms, flipping her long hair back with a look of utter disdain. “Coming to the fifth floor to report to HR on your first day of work is basic knowledge. Where did an uncultured country bumpkin like you even come from?”
“…”
Anna strutted out of the office, looking exactly like a peacock parading its feathers.
Yun Chu had been scolded for no reason, and the worst part was that she couldn’t even talk back. She casually flipped through a few pages of the documents on the desk, and her jaw nearly dropped to the floor. Aside from the standard contracts, these people had actually prepared a duplicate copy fully translated into Braille…
Just how much extra workload was Mu Ze forcing upon them?
Meanwhile, in the bedroom on the second floor of the Mu Residence.
Mu Ze held his phone, monitoring the surveillance feed of his office. He then exited the interface and had his smart assistant dial Gao Sheng.
The phone rang once before Gao Sheng answered, “President Mu.”
“Reassign Anna to an out-of-town project. Make sure she doesn’t return for the next few years.”
Calling out of the blue just for this? Had Anna offended President Mu? Gao Sheng dared not speculate too much; President Mu’s mind was not something ordinary people could fathom. “Understood, President Mu.”
Yun Chu took the elevator down to the fifth floor. This floor was packed with cubicles, and the desks were piled high with dense paperwork. She located the HR office, knocked, and walked in.
“I’m here to report for duty.”
The man closest to her looked up briefly. “Name.”
“Yun Chu.”
He typed her name into the computer system, and her background information was instantly pulled up. “Only a high school diploma! How did you get hired?”
The moment he said that, several surrounding colleagues immediately gathered around to join in on the gossip.
“Your college major was jewelry design, but why are there absolutely no records starting from your junior year?” The man scrolled up and down with his mouse, his eyes full of questions.
The Mu Group’s information system was built in collaboration with major universities, so anyone who attended these institutions would have their records logged, aside from highly confidential data.
Yun Chu visibly panicked. She lowered her head, not daring to look at the monitor. Deep down, she was terrifiedâterrified of anyone finding out she had been to prison. No one would care to ask why she had committed intentional assault; they would only care about the fact that she had harmed someone and served time, branding her an unacceptable criminal.
Failing to find the answers he wanted, the man grew increasingly curious. “You need to clarify what you did after your junior year. The Mu Group does not hire people with unaccounted backgrounds.”
Yun Chu picked at her fingernails, her brows tightly knit as she kept her gaze averted. “I… I…”
“Yun Chu?”
A voice suddenly called out from behind her. Yun Chu turned around, looking at the man at the doorway in complete surprise. “Xiao He?”
Xiao He was her college classmate; they had even worked on course projects together. She hadn’t expected to run into him here. He looked much more capable and steady than he did during their university days, sporting a clean crew cut, a white T-shirt, and light-colored jeans, giving off the vibe of a romantic K-drama male lead.
The HR employee caught on. “You two are classmates? Then do you know where she went during her junior year?”
Yun Chu lowered her head again; this was a topic she desperately wanted to avoid.
Sensing her distress, Xiao He offered a gentle smile. “Her family experienced an unexpected crisis, so she withdrew from school.”
Everyone readily believed Xiao He. After all, words spoken by someone with both good looks and proven capability carried far more weight.
Shortly after, Gao Sheng came rushing in, completely out of breath. “She is President Mu’s fiancĂ©e. In the future, anyone who has business with her must consult me first.”
If President Mu hadn’t called again to warn him that if his wife faced any grievances in HR, he might as well resign, Gao Sheng wouldn’t have sprinted over in such a frantic state.
Several colleagues in the HR department, especially the man who had just looked up her files, instantly turned weak in the knees. He hadn’t said anything wrong, had he?
Xiao He’s face remained calm, but a trace of hard-to-detect disappointment flickered in his eyes. “Is what he said true?”
Yun Chu didn’t know how to explain it, so she simply nodded.
Within moments, the news that the CEO’s fiancĂ©e had come to work at the Mu Group spread like wildfire across the entire corporation. Yun Chu couldn’t care less; her only goal was to safely get through these two months or so.
In the afternoon, at the Capital City People’s Hospital.
Following their schedule, Yun Chu took a cab to the hospital, after which Gao Sheng escorted Mu Ze to the restroom. She was left waiting alone outside the ophthalmology department.
There were very few people on this floor. Aside from the heavy smell of disinfectant, only a few nurses passed by occasionally. Yun Chu sat in the waiting area of the corridor and pulled out her phone, intending to watch some videos to pass the time.
A pair of casual shoes suddenly stopped right in front of her. “You’re Mu Ze’s fiancĂ©e?”
Yun Chu looked up. The handsome man standing before her wore a white lab coat, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. He had a clean, fair complexion and gentle facial contours, exuding the refined air of a scholar.
Yun Chu put away her phone and stood up, glancing at the medical badge pinned to his chest. Ophthalmologist, Shen Yan.
“Are you Mu Ze’s attending physician?”
A flash of surprise crossed Shen Yan’s eyes. He looked down at his badge, but the surprise quickly dissipated. “Aren’t you a smart one.”
Looking closely, she truly was beautiful, with sharply defined, deep facial features that carried an almost exotic elegance. Even with all the beautiful women he had encountered, anyone would feel eclipsed standing next to her. No wonder Brother Ze insisted on choosing her as his fiancée. He must have fallen hard.
Shen Yan sat down next to Yun Chu, leaving a polite distance between them. He turned sideways, resting his arm along the back of the seats. “Brother Ze and I grew up together. I can tell you anything you want to know about him. I even know for a fact that he was still wetting the bed at eight years old.”
“Haha! Him?” Yun Chu was instantly amused by his words.
Eight years old, wetting the bedâand this was about the stoic, humorless Mu Ze. The sheer contrast of that mental image was too absurd to contemplate.
“Is it that funny?”
A cold, detached voice cut in, instantly shattering the lively atmosphere between the two.
Yun Chu and Shen Yan locked eyes and shut their mouths in unison. With the assistant pushing the wheelchair from behind, Shen Yan stepped forward, completely shedding his playful demeanor from moments ago. “Let me take over.”
Shen Yan pushed Mu Ze into the office, with Yun Chu following right behind.
“Wait outside.” Mu Ze spoke up abruptly, clearly directing his words at Yun Chu.
“?”
If he wasn’t going to let her accompany him inside, what was the point of bringing her to the hospital in the first place? Yun Chu stood behind him, glared at his back, and turned around to return to the waiting area.
The assistant had already gone back down to the car. Left with nothing to do, Yun Chu stared out the window into the distance, only for her vision to be thoroughly ruined by an unwelcome presence.
“Yun Chu! Did you deliberately come to the hospital just to make our lives miserable?”
