Lu Shiyanâs gaze was incredibly serious. “Tomorrow, Iâll take you to the town to register our marriage.”
Su Wanqing blinked. “Tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow.” Lu Shiyan stared at her. “What, are you planning to go back on your word again?”
Su Wanqing looked at him and suddenly smiled.
“Whoâs going back on their word? I just wanted to say…” She paused, tilting her head to look at him. “Shouldn’t I have what other people get?”
Lu Shiyan blanked out for a moment. “What do you want?”
Su Wanqing extended her hand, counting them down by folding her fingers one by one. “The ‘Three Rounds and One Sound,’ of course. A bicycle, a wristwatch, a sewing machine, and a radio. I can’t just marry you with absolutely nothing, right?”
Lu Shiyan looked at her, his expression shifting slightly.
Thinking that she had put him in a difficult position, Su Wanqing was just about to speak when Lu Shiyan suddenly smiled.
He had thought this little enchantress was about to change her mind again, but a few items like these were absolutely nothing to him.
“Alright. Do you want anything else?” he asked.
Su Wanqing looked at him expectantly. “Can you get me whatever I ask for?”
“Just say the word,” Lu Shiyan spoke up. “I’ll find a way to get it for you.”
Su Wanqing blinked, finding it a bit hard to believe. “Really?”
Amusement danced in Lu Shiyan’s eyes. “Really.”
She suddenly recalled that the original book mentioned Lu Shiyan was a core figure in the black market, a man with far-reaching influence who could get his hands on absolutely anything.
Su Wanqing instantly threw politeness out the window. “Then I also want a large gold bangle, gold earrings, and a gold ring.”
“Alright, I’ll figure something out for you, my little money grubber.” Lu Shiyan reached out and gently pinched her nose.
Su Wanqing suddenly snapped back to realityâthis was the year 1973…
Her heart tightened.
“Will there be any danger in doing that?”
Lu Shiyan looked at her.
Su Wanqing furrowed her brows, her tone laced with worry. “Bicycle coupons aren’t easy to get, and neither are coupons for sewing machines and wristwatches. Normal people can’t get these things, right? If you go to the black market to try your luck and happen to get targeted… And how are we going to explain it to the villagers?”
The more she thought about it, the more anxious she became. “Don’t go causing trouble for yourself just for these things. I was just speaking casually. It’s fine whether we have them or not, really.”
Looking at her, Lu Shiyanâs heart melted into a complete puddle of tenderness, wishing he could pluck the moon from the sky just to give it to her.
He reached out, drawing her into his embrace, his chin resting against the top of her head.
“Don’t worry,” he said in a very low voice. “Leave everything to me.”
Burying herself in his chest, Su Wanqing asked muffledly, “Is it really going to be fine?”
“It’s fine,” Lu Shiyan said. “Your man knows what he’s doing.”
Su Wanqing froze, then lifted her head to glare at him. “Bah, shameless.”
The corners of Lu Shiyan’s mouth curved upward. “No matter how shameless, I’m still your man.”
Hearing the words ‘your man,’ Su Wanqing’s face instantly flushed red. She reached out to push him away. “I only agreed because you smacked me! It doesn’t count!”
Lu Shiyan let out a low chuckle, wrapping his arms around her even tighter.
Su Wanqing struggled a couple of times but couldn’t break free, so she stopped throwing a fuss.
Leaning against his chest, she quietly began to calculate in her mind how to live a good life in this era.
She wasn’t particularly skilled at anything else, except that she knew a bit more about the future than othersâthough she couldn’t remember the details very clearly, only the general years. However, she was great at cooking.
When the time came, she could make some food to sell at the black market, which should bring in a decent income…
While she was lost in thought, Lu Shiyan gently patted her head.
“What are you thinking about? I’ll come pick you up first thing tomorrow morning. We’ll go to the production brigade first to request time off and submit the marriage report, then head to the town. It just so happens that Uncle Li needs to haul fertilizer and seeds to town for the brigade, so we can hitch a ride on his tractor.”
Snapping out of her thoughts, Su Wanqing nodded. “Alright.”
After parting ways, Su Wanqing tiptoed back to the youth educated center.
The room was pitch black and completely silent. She stuffed the cloth bundle under her pillow, slipped off her shoes, and lay down on the bed, her heart still thumping wildly.
She tossed and turned, burying her face in the pillow, suddenly feeling a bit dazed.
It had only been a few days since she traveled through time to this place, and she was already getting married?
But at the thought of Lu Shiyan’s eight-pack abs, his handsome face, and his intensely affectionate gaze that could make even looking at a dog seem deeply romantic, she felt like she wasn’t losing out at all.
Anyway, living in this era, she would have to marry sooner or later.
The next morning, Su Wanqing was woken up by the sound of voices outside.
She sat up and rubbed her eyes, only to see Zhang Hongying standing at the doorway, whispering back and forth with Li Xiulian.
Seeing that she was awake, Zhang Hongying gave a cold snort and turned her head away.
Su Wanqing couldn’t be bothered to pay her any attention, getting up to put on her clothes, brush her hair, and wash her face.
However, Li Xiulian actively approached her with a smile plastered across her face, putting on a show of deep concern.
“Wanqing, have you really thought this through?” She stood very close, her voice soft and gentle. “I heard from Hongying that you’re going to register your marriage with Lu Shiyan?”
Su Wanqing was currently drawing her eyebrows in front of the mirror. She shot her a glance through the glass reflection but remained silent.
Undeterred by the silence, Li Xiulian continued to advise her, “Wanqing, although we haven’t known each other for long, I am truly looking out for your best interests. A man like Lu Shiyan… what kind of good life can you possibly have by following him? Don’t do something on an impulse that you’ll regret in the future.”
Su Wanqing still didn’t say a word, switching to the other eyebrow to continue drawing.
Seeing that she wasn’t biting, Li Xiulian leaned in a bit closer. “Besides, weren’t you and educated youth Lin engaged since childhood? Back then, your parents and Uncle Lin’s family made a formal agreement, and quite a few people know about this matter. Now that you’re suddenly registering a marriage with someone else, as for educated youth Lin’s side… it wouldn’t be very appropriate, right?”
Su Wanqing’s hand paused for a moment.
She suddenly remembered. Oh, right, there was still the matter of the engagement.
When she read the book, there indeed was such a plot point.
Back then, the two families had a great relationship. When the original owner’s parents realized their family was about to face political trouble, they sent their daughter down to the countryside ahead of time to spare her from suffering. Her father had specifically given the Lin family one thousand yuan, calling it a dowry for his daughter, intending for them to purchase wedding items in the future.
Later, the Su family fell from grace. Although Lin Wenyan came down to the countryside with her, he never mentioned this engagement ever again.
Only the brainless original owner kept trailing behind Lin Wenyan’s heels, thinking that as long as she sucked up to him, she could follow him back to the city to enjoy a wealthy life.
How could she have known that Lin Wenyan had long since fooled around with the village chief’s daughter, Li Xiulian?
He refused to acknowledge the marriage engagement, yet he didn’t miss out on a single benefit. Lin Wenyan accepted every single egg and malted milk extract the original owner sent over. Even regarding that one thousand yuan, Lin Wenyan had never once brought up the idea of returning it.
Su Wanqing put down her eyebrow pencil, turned around, and looked at Li Xiulian with a sweet smile.
“Xiulian, if you hadn’t brought this up, I would have almost forgotten about it.”
Li Xiulian blanked out for a moment. “Huh?”
Su Wanqing stood up and patted her hands. “Now that you mention it, I remember. Back then, my dad gave the Lin family one thousand yuan as a dowry. Since my engagement with Lin Wenyan doesn’t count anymore, he should return that money to me, shouldn’t he?”
Li Xiulian’s expression shifted slightly as she let out two forced laughs. “This… how would I know about that? That’s between you and educated youth Lin…”
Looking at her reaction, Su Wanqing understood the situation perfectly in her heart.
Li Xiulian had long since hooked up with Lin Wenyan; the original book had written it down loud and clear.
